The Competence Quotient

I think most people would agree that you can improve at anything
with practice, right? Watching a young child advance through the
competence quotient is an exciting endeavor as we witness their
first steps, words and achievements. But how much practice does it
take to “master” a skill?

Well, Daniel Coyle, author of “The Talent Code” theorizes that 10,000 hours of deep practice
will make you an expert at any skill you desire to achieve. Imagine, being a concert pianist or
major league baseball player. According to Coyle, there is no need to imagine, devote 10,000
hours of diligent effort into a task and become an expert. Which begs the question…Are you
expert at something? The answer is a resounding “probably”!
Haven’t we all mastered something during our life’s journey? Some of the things we have
mastered, I bet we didn’t even set out to achieve, they happened through sheer experience,
right!?!? It often amazes me that when you meet someone who possesses pure mastery of a
skill, they are often oblivious as to how they became good at the skill in the first place.
I remember a conversation I had with the CEO of Bengal Bay Grill, Eric Taylor in May of 2018,
when I casually asked him what the next great trend was in the fast-casual restaurant industry.
Without hesitation he said “Fast Casual Indian dining with an American spin”. The answer
shocked me, but in retrospect, I now know why Mr. Taylor saw the massive success of Bengal
Bay Grill before existed, it was 10,000 hours of experience while working with some of the most
successful brands in the industry.
Mr. Taylor had become an expert and wasn’t even aware of it. Uttering that single sentence
lead to the creation of Bengal Bay Grill and the creation of a dream team of culinary experts
who have created a one of a kind restaurant experience never before seen in the USA. Start
pursuing your 10,000 hours of experience now!
